🎯 Session Summary

Playing the Game Developer path at Level 0001 · Web Fundamentals (🌱 Apprentice), I walked a 5-quest window (window 2 of 6; the full level holds 26 quests) as a beginner would: enable GitHub Pages → understand the platform stack → build a personal site → summon a self-operating Jekyll site → optimize it for SEO. The sealed execute-engine evidence scores the slice at avg 54.0% (0 pass · 3 warn · 2 fail), and my linked-journey read agrees: this window does not hold together as a clean learning path.

Two quests are strong-with-caveats (The Summoning 78%, SEO Optimization 62%) and one is a usable-but-mislabeled report (Stack Attack Analysis 60%). But the window is dragged down by two blockers a real learner hits head-on: personal-site (16%) is non-functional as a tutorial — a leftover reference table, not steps — and the level’s flagship main quest github-pages-portal was never scored: the engine hit its 40-turn cap after the sandbox denied network/jekyll serve commands, so its fail is an execution error, not a content judgment. Headline verdict: fail for the slice, with concrete, mostly small fixes below.

🔬 Evidence

All figures below come from the sealed walk-evidence.json (execute mode, disposable sandbox). I did not re-run the engine; everything I did not personally re-run is drawn from the recorded verdicts, and my own contribution (§Chain Continuity) is labeled reasoned.

1. github-pages-portal — ❌ overall 0.0 (errored, not scored). No per-dimension scores; no snippet coverage recorded. The engine’s terminal state was max_turns with errors: ["Reached maximum number of turns (40)"]. The recorded permission_denials show it was blocked on exactly the commands a Pages quest needs:

  • timeout 10 curl -sI https://rubygems.org … → denied (no network in sandbox)
  • bundle exec jekyll serve --port 4001 … then curl http://localhost:4001/ → denied → Interpretation: this is an environment/harness outcome, not evidence the quest is broken. Its content is real and structured (I read it: per-OS clone/index.html/commit blocks, a Chapter 1 repo-setup walkthrough). Treat the fail as unverified, not failed.

2. it-journey-stack-analysis — ⚠️ 60.0. Snippets: available 17 (8 runnable) · ran 14 · passed 10 · failed 4 · skipped 2 · reasoned 3. Recorded findings I trust because they carry command evidence:

  • YAML blocks (_config.yml, docker-compose, deploy workflow) parse cleanly with PyYAML; docker compose config validates the compose file. ✅
  • Dockerfile builds & runs once requirements.txt + the validator script are supplied. ✅
  • ruby -c fails on the “Ruby Dependencies” fence (unexpected fraction part after numeric literal on jekyll (3.9.5)) → it’s prose mislabeled ` ```ruby `. ❌

There is essentially nothing to execute — I confirmed by reading the source (99 lines): it’s a URL/services reference table, not a build tutorial, with objectives the doc itself flags as “auto-seeded … authors should refine.”

4. self-operating-website-01-the-summoning — ⚠️ 78.0. Snippets: available 9 (3 runnable) · ran 8 · passed 8 · failed 0 · reasoned 1. Dimensions: commands_work 4, content_accuracy 3, completeness 4, clarity 4, structure 5, safety 5. Recorded evidence: the YAML configs, the Liquid brand template, and the session-scribe bash script were all created and executed in the sandbox and behaved as described — including the subtle first-commit HEAD^1 fallback. Highest verifiability in the slice.

5. seo-optimization — ⚠️ 62.0. Snippets: available 11 (5 runnable) · ran 9 · passed 7 · failed 2 · skipped 1 · reasoned 4. Dimensions: commands_work 2, content_accuracy 3, completeness 4, clarity 3, structure 4, safety 5. Two failures carry real build evidence:

  • bundle add jekyll-seo-tag jekyll-sitemap alone did not generate /sitemap.xml — verified against Jekyll 4.4.1 and a real build; the sitemap appeared only after _config.yml’s plugins: list was edited. ❌
  • The {​% raw %​}{​% seo %​}{​% endraw %​} snippet, pasted verbatim (with the raw wrapper), breaks SEO tag generation. ❌

🐞 Issues Found

🔗 Chain Continuity

Reading the five quests in plan order as one learner’s path (all findings here are reasoned — my linked-journey read, not re-executed):

  • Ordering is data-windowed, not pedagogical. This is window 2/6 of the level, so the slice is a slice, not a designed sequence — and it shows. A beginner would expect: enable Pages → build something → deploy → optimize. What they get is: Pages portal → a deep stack-analysis report → a broken personal-site stub → an advanced agent/CI “Summoning” → SEO. Quests 2 and 4 are noticeably heavier than the “🟢 Easy” label implies (a full architecture report; a Claude-Code-OAuth-driven self-operating site), and none of the five declare quest_dependencies linking each other (required_quests: [] across the board), so there’s no scaffolding telling the learner what order to actually take.
  • Prerequisite gaps. github-pages-portal assumes Git + a GitHub account (stated) — fine as an entry point. But self-operating-website-01-the-summoning assumes “a live zer0-mistakes Jekyll site (complete the prequel epic first)” and a Claude Code OAuth token — neither is produced by any earlier quest in this window, so a learner arriving from quest 1 hits an unmet prerequisite. seo-optimization assumes an existing Jekyll site with a Gemfile too; again supplied by the (out-of-window) prequel, not by quests 1–3 here.
  • The broken link in the chain is quest 3. personal-site sits between two capable main quests and contributes nothing runnable — a learner who finishes the Pages portal and lands here gets a services table, not the promised “build a personal website.” It breaks momentum precisely where a hands-on win should reinforce quest 1.
  • What does hold together: github-pages-portalseo-optimization is a genuinely coherent pair (deploy a static site, then make it discoverable), and the-summoning is the standout artifact-producing quest. If this slice were re-sequenced as portal → (personal-site rewritten) → summoning → seo, and dependencies were declared, it would read as a real path.

🧠 Reasoning & Method

  • Mode: execute, in the disposable workflow sandbox. Evidence was pre-computed and sealed by the workflow (walk-evidence.json / walk-evidence.md); I consumed it as-is and did not re-run the engine (its child claude processes can’t authenticate from my Bash tool). I made no edits to walk-plan.json or walk-evidence.*.
  • What I ran vs. reasoned: All passed/failed/skipped snippet outcomes and per-dimension scores come from the sealed engine, which actually executed commands in the sandbox (I quote its recorded commands/results, not invented output). I additionally read all five quest sources in plan order to produce the §Chain Continuity analysis — that section is reasoned, not re-tested.
  • Coverage & caps honestly stated:
    • This is a 5-quest window of a 26-quest level — I walked exactly the planned window and did not expand to the other 21 quests.
    • Quest 1 (github-pages-portal) was NOT scored. The engine hit its 40-turn cap after the sandbox denied network (curl rubygems) and jekyll serve — expected, since GitHub Pages is inherently network/deploy-bound and can’t be exercised offline. Its fail/0.0 is an execution error, and I have deliberately not reported it as a content-quality failure; its content is unverified.
    • Two quests (2, 5) had snippet failures that carry explicit command evidence (ruby -c, py_compile, real Jekyll builds), which is why I trust those issues.
  • Confidence: High on the four scored quests’ evidence (engine actually ran the commands). Medium on the slice-level fail headline — it correctly reflects one non-functional quest plus one unverifiable main quest, but note that 3 of 5 are warn (usable with small fixes), so the level is closer to “warn with two blockers” than uniformly broken. Low/none on github-pages-portal’s intrinsic quality — it needs a network-capable or mocked re-run to judge fairly.
