Quest-perfection walkthrough of the Web Fundamentals slice game-developer/0001 on 2026-08-15, engine verdict warn. An evidence-based, learner's-eye…

Slice game-developer/0001 · Level 0001 (Web Fundamentals) · Apprentice tier · Engine verdict ⚠️ warn · Walked 2026-08-15

🔗 Perfection run · 🏠 Perfection dashboard · 📄 Raw report · 🕘 Change history

🎯 Session Summary

I walked the Game Developer → Level 0001 (Web Fundamentals, Apprentice 🌱) slice — a rotating window of 5 quests (window 1 of 6, offset 5) out of the level’s 26 total. The evidence was pre-computed and sealed by the workflow’s deterministic execute-engine step (walk-evidence.json); I consumed it as-is and did not re-run the engine.

Headline verdict: ⚠️ warn. Two quests produced real, sandbox-backed verdicts and both hold up well — Git Workflow Mastery (82, pass) and GitHub Pages Basics (72, warn) — with their central mechanics verified against a live Jekyll build and a real Git repo. But three of the five quests (Jekyll Fundamentals, YAML Configuration, Liquid Templating) never reached a verdict: the engine’s child process hit its 40-turn ceiling and exited 1, so they are errored, not content failures, and I have zero command-level evidence for them. That un-walked majority — plus one genuine copy-paste bug in GitHub Pages Basics (an invalid gh api placeholder that would 404) — is why the session is a warn rather than a pass. A maintainer should treat the three errored quests as unproven this run and re-queue them, not as broken.

🗺️ The Journey

Walked in planner order (note: this window’s order is not the pedagogical dependency order — see Chain Continuity):

  1. ⚠️ GitHub Pages Basics: Host Your Jekyll Site for Free72 · core baseurl/relative_url + JEKYLL_ENV production gating verified live against a real Jekyll build; one high-severity gh api :owner placeholder bug that would 404.
  2. Jekyll Fundamentals: Build Static Sites with Rubyno verdict (engine errored, max-turns) · not walked; static read only.
  3. YAML Configuration: Site Settings Masteryno verdict (engine errored, max-turns) · not walked; static read only.
  4. Git Workflow Mastery: Branches, Merging & Team Collaboration82 · branch → commit → merge/rebase → conflict resolution all reproduced in a real repo, markers matched verbatim; minor merge-diagram inaccuracy (fast-forward case).
  5. Liquid Templating: Dynamic Content for Jekyll Sitesno verdict (engine errored, max-turns) · not walked; static read only.

✅ 1 pass · ⚠️ 1 warn · ⛔ 3 engine-errored · average of the 2 scored = 77.0%.

🔬 Evidence

Everything below comes from walk-evidence.json (execute mode, real commands in a disposable sandbox). Only two quests carry machine evidence; the other three carry none.

1. GitHub Pages Basics — ⚠️ 72 (executed)

Snippet coverage: ran 8, passed 7, failed 1, skipped 4, reasoned 8 (7 runnable snippets available). Per-dimension: commands_work 3 · content_accuracy 3 · completeness 3 · clarity 5 · structure 5 · safety 5.

  • passedgit init && git add . && git commit -m "Initial site" ran cleanly on a real Jekyll scaffold (“8 files changed, 267 insertions(+)”).
  • passed — With _config.yml set to url: "https://username.github.io" / baseurl: "/my-castle" and bundle exec jekyll build --baseurl "/my-castle", the relative_url snippet produced /my-castle/assets/css/style.css and /my-castle/about/ exactly as claimed; the “wrong” hard-coded path correctly omitted the prefix. The quest’s central technical claim is confirmed.
  • passedbundle exec jekyll serve --baseurl "/my-castle" started and honored the baseurl.
  • passedJEKYLL_ENV=production bundle exec jekyll build toggled jekyll.environment == "production" correctly; the analytics-gating conditional rendered only in the production build.
  • failedgh api -X POST repos/:owner/my-castle/pages ...: :owner is not a valid gh placeholder (gh api --help documents only {owner}, {repo}, {branch}); as written it sends a literal :owner path segment and 404s. → Issue #1.
  • skippedgh repo create --public --source=. --push, gh auth login (interactive/network auth; flags verified valid via --help).
  • reasoned — macOS/Windows install blocks, CNAME/DNS reference tables (apex A records 185.199.108–111.153 match GitHub’s current documented IPs).

4. Git Workflow Mastery — ✅ 82 (executed)

Snippet coverage: ran 9, passed 7, failed 2, skipped 3, reasoned 1 (10 runnable snippets available). Per-dimension: commands_work 4 · content_accuracy 4 · completeness 4 · clarity 4 · structure 4 · safety 5.

  • passed — Full Chapter 1 branch loop (git switch main/pull/switch -c/add/commit/push -u) against a real local repo + bare remote worked once a tracking branch existed.
  • passedgit status / git log --oneline --graph --all / git diff all produced expected output.
  • passedgit merge (fast-forwarded in the simple case; produced an explicit merge commit when re-tested with a genuinely diverged main), git rebase main, and git fetch + rebase origin/main all behaved as documented.
  • passed — Reproduced the Chapter 3 add/add conflict; real Git markers matched the quest’s <<<<<<< HEAD / ======= / >>>>>>> example verbatim; resolve → git addgit commit, plus git merge --abort, git restore, git revert, git reflog all behaved as documented.
  • failed (sandbox limitation, not a quest bug) — sudo apt install denied by the sandbox permission system; git/gh were already preinstalled (git 2.54.0, gh 2.97.0), so the install was moot. The three git config --global lines ran and succeeded.
  • failed (sandbox limitation, not a quest bug) — gh auth status reported “not logged into any GitHub hosts”; gh pr create / gh pr merge therefore un-runnable — inherent to the quest’s own GitHub-account prerequisite.
  • Engine surfaced a real accuracy nuance: the Chapter 2 merge ASCII diagram implies a merge commit always forms, but git merge fast-forwards (no merge commit) when main hasn’t diverged. → Issue #3.

2 / 3 / 5. Jekyll Fundamentals, YAML Configuration, Liquid Templating — ⛔ no verdict

The engine child process exited 1 after reaching its 40-turn limit (terminal_reason: max_turns) before emitting a parseable verdict, so verdict_obj is null and overall is 0.0 for all three. These are harness errors, not content judgments — the JSON records them under errored: 3, distinct from a scored fail. No commands were run and no snippets recorded, so I have no execution evidence for them. My observations on these three below are reasoned (static source read) only and must not be read as verified.

🐞 Issues Found

Evidenced issues (a command was actually run or the engine directly observed it):

  • HIGH · GitHub Pages Basics · Chapter 1, “Enable Pages” CLI snippet (line ~236) · Observed (failed): gh api -X POST repos/:owner/my-castle/pages uses the invalid :owner placeholder; gh api --help documents only {owner}/{repo}/{branch}, so this sends a literal :owner and 404s when copy-pasted. · Fix: change to repos/{owner}/my-castle/pages.
  • MEDIUM · Git Workflow Mastery · Chapter 2, merge ASCII diagram (lines ~284–294) · Observed: running git merge on an un-diverged main fast-forwards with no merge commit, contradicting the diagram that always shows a merge commit M. · Fix: note that git merge only creates a merge commit when main has advanced since the branch point; mention --no-ff to force one.
  • LOW · GitHub Pages Basics · Pre-Launch Checklist (line ~399) · Observed: a stock jekyll new build produced neither robots.txt nor sitemap.xml; the checklist implies they appear automatically. · Fix: clarify jekyll-sitemap must be enabled and robots.txt is usually manual.
  • LOW · Git Workflow Mastery · Chapter 1 branch loop (lines ~222–223) · Observed: git pull fails with “no tracking information” on a fresh repo with no upstream. · Fix: add a one-line note (“first push: git push -u origin main once”).

Reasoned issues (content-review / static read, not command-verified):

  • MEDIUM · GitHub Pages Basics · Secondary objective “GitHub Actions Build” (line 114) · Reasoned: listed as an objective but never taught in the body — only a generic “Understanding GitHub Actions” doc link and a passing mention; no Settings → Pages → Source: GitHub Actions walkthrough or example workflow. · Fix: teach it briefly or downgrade/remove the objective.
  • LOW · Git Workflow Mastery · Secondary objective “Undo Safely” (lines 112, 356) · Reasoned: git restore/git revert/git reflog are billed as a secondary objective but appear only in one prose admonition, with no worked example unlike every other skill. · Fix: add a short worked example.
  • LOW · Liquid Templating · Chapter 2 loop example (line ~266) · Reasoned, needs verification (I did NOT run this): {% raw %}{% elsif post.date > site.time | date: "%s" | minus: 604800 %}{% endraw %} compares a date object against a filtered string; worth confirming it evaluates as intended in a real build. I could not test it because this quest errored in the engine. · Fix: verify in a live build; simplify if it doesn’t behave.

No other blocking issues were found in the two quests that were actually walked — the two failed snippets in Git Workflow Mastery are sandbox-auth limitations, not quest defects.

🔗 Chain Continuity

Reading the five sources as one learner’s journey (dependency metadata + prose):

  • The window order is not the learning order — a windowing artifact, not a content bug. The planner presents GitHub Pages Basics first, but that quest’s required_quests is jekyll-fundamentals, which appears second. A learner literally following this 5-quest window would open GitHub Pages Basics already assuming a working Jekyll site they haven’t built yet. This is expected: the slice is a mid-level rotating window (offset 5 of a 26-quest, dependency-sorted level), so the cut crosses the dependency chain. In the real curriculum, Jekyll Fundamentals (required_quests: [], the foundation stone) is walked first and everything downstream references its my-castle scaffold. Worth flagging so a maintainer reading only this report doesn’t mistake the order for the intended path.
  • unlocks metadata forms a cycle. jekyll-fundamentals → github-pages-basics → git-workflow-mastery → jekyll-fundamentals (each quest lists the next in its unlocks_quests). The hard required_quests graph is acyclic (github-pages & yaml & liquid all require jekyll-fundamentals; git-workflow requires the prior-level git-basics), so this is a low-severity soft-link inconsistency, but git-workflow-mastery.unlocks_quests: [jekyll-fundamentals] is pedagogically backwards — a 🟡 Medium quest “unlocking” a 🟢 Easy foundation quest. Reasoned only.
  • Where the chain does hold (from static reading): the slice shares a consistent running example — the my-castle site and a recipes/team data model — across Jekyll Fundamentals → YAML Configuration → Liquid Templating, and each quest restates the same _config.yml, _data, and relative_url concepts. Liquid Templating’s site.posts examples are satisfied by the sample post a fresh jekyll new creates, and its _data/navigation.yml challenge is set up by YAML Configuration’s data-file chapter. On paper the three teach in a coherent order; I just could not confirm any of it by execution because all three errored.
  • Prerequisite honesty gap (reasoned): Git Workflow Mastery’s Chapter 1 assumes an already-pushed repo with upstream tracking (the git pull “no tracking information” failure the engine hit) — reasonable given its stated Git Basics prerequisite, but never restated at the top of the chapter.

🧠 Reasoning & Method

  • Mode: execute. I did not run the engine — I consumed the workflow-sealed walk-evidence.json / walk-evidence.md verbatim, as required (the engine’s child claude processes can’t authenticate from an agent’s Bash tool). I did not edit walk-plan.json or walk-evidence.*.
  • What I ran vs. reasoned: I ran nothing myself — all passed/failed claims above are lifted from the sealed engine evidence (real sandbox commands). Everything I add on top — chain continuity, ordering, the three errored quests, and the two reasoned issues — is static source reading and is labeled reasoned.
  • Coverage — stated plainly: Only 2 of 5 quests were actually walked to a verdict (GitHub Pages Basics, Git Workflow Mastery). 3 of 5 (Jekyll Fundamentals, YAML Configuration, Liquid Templating) errored at the harness level (claude exited 1, terminal_reason: max_turns, 40-turn ceiling) and have no execution evidence whatsoever — I treated them as unproven, not as passing or failing. This window covers 5 of the level’s 26 quests; the remaining 21 are out of scope for this run and swept by later windows.
  • Sandbox limitations reflected in the evidence: sudo apt was permission-denied and gh was unauthenticated in the sandbox, so install and gh pr/gh auth steps could not run — these are environment constraints, and I did not count them against the quests.
  • Confidence: High on the two scored quests’ verified mechanics (live Jekyll build + real Git repo are strong evidence) and on the gh api :owner bug. None on the three errored quests’ runtime behavior — my notes there are reasoned-only. Overall session verdict = warn, driven by the un-walked majority plus one high-severity copy-paste bug.
  • Recommendation to the caller: re-queue Jekyll Fundamentals, YAML Configuration, and Liquid Templating with a higher turn budget so this window can be certified; route the gh api :owner fix (high) and the merge-diagram / GitHub-Actions-objective fixes (medium) to a content pass.
