🎯 Session Summary

I walked the first window (1 of 6) of the Game Developer → Level 0001 “Web Fundamentals” (Apprentice 🌱) path — 5 of the level’s 26 quests, in the planner’s dependency-sorted order — backed by the workflow’s sealed execute-mode engine evidence (real commands run in a disposable sandbox, not model assertions).

Headline verdict: WARN, avg 71.2% (3 pass / 1 warn / 1 fail). The core web-authoring spine — Advanced Markdown (97), CSS Styling Basics (94), Bootstrap Framework (85) — is genuinely strong: the engine actually rendered every Markdown/Kramdown syntax example, assembled and screenshotted a real responsive CSS page in headless Chromium at desktop and mobile breakpoints, and compiled real Bootstrap Sass output to verify specific claims (mt-4 = margin-top: 1.5rem). Two quests drag the average down for unrelated reasons: Technology Stack Analysis: Barodybroject (64%, warn) is a mostly-accurate but heavily drifted external-repo report whose “point-in-time” disclaimer doesn’t cover everything that’s changed; Building & Testing the Git Init Shell Script (16%, fail) is entirely unrunnable because scripts/git_init.sh, the one artifact every command in the quest depends on, does not exist anywhere in the live bamr87/it-journey repository — confirmed independently in this session’s own working tree, not just the engine’s sandbox clone. This is the same blocking defect a July 27 walkthrough of this exact window found; it has not been fixed in the intervening month.

🗺️ The Journey

Walked in planner order (window index 0 of 6; stats.total_quests = 26):

# Verdict Quest Type Score One-line takeaway
1 Advanced Markdown: Tables, Footnotes & Kramdown main 97 Exemplary — all 8 markdown/Liquid syntax examples rendered against real Kramdown/Liquid engines and matched claims exactly.
2 ⚠️ Technology Stack Analysis: Barodybroject side 64 Mostly-accurate, well-disclaimered report, but drift extends beyond what the disclaimer covers, and it lacks a hands-on exercise.
3 CSS Styling Basics: Selectors, the Box Model & Layout main 94 Technically excellent — headless-Chromium screenshots confirm box model, flexbox, and responsive-grid claims exactly.
4 Bootstrap Framework: Build Responsive Sites Fast main 85 Solid and current (BS 5.3); Sass customization section omits the actual compile command.
5 Building & Testing the Git Init Shell Script main 16 Non-functional — scripts/git_init.sh doesn’t exist in the repo; every command fails with “No such file or directory”.

Avg 71.2% · 3 pass / 1 warn / 1 fail · engine cost ≈ $4.16.

🔬 Evidence

All outcomes below are from commands the execute engine actually ran in its disposable sandbox, quoted/trimmed from the sealed walk-evidence.json.

1. Advanced Markdown — ✅ 97 (13 snippets recorded, 11 ran / 11 passed / 2 reasoned)

  • Dimensions: commands_work 5, content_accuracy 5, completeness 5, clarity 4, structure 5, safety 5.
  • Rendered with the real Ruby kramdown 2.5.2 gem (in Jekyll’s default GFM-input mode) and the real liquid 5.13 gem: the pipe-table alignment (:---/:--:/---:text-align: left/center/right), the [^speed] footnote (superscript + bottom <div class="footnotes">), the checkbox task list, the language-fenced Python code block (Rouge-highlighted), the > **Note:**/⚠️ **Warning:** blockquote callouts, the {: .lead #intro } Kramdown attribute list (→ exact class="lead" id="intro" HTML), and the definition list all produced precisely the HTML the quest claims.
  • The {% raw %}...{% endraw %} Liquid example rendered as literal unexecuted tag text, confirming the quest’s own explanation of why it’s needed inside a Jekyll-built page.
  • Setup snippets (mkdir -p ~/md-quest && cd ~/md-quest && touch guide.md) ran cleanly on macOS/Linux paths; code guide.md couldn’t launch (no VS Code binary in the headless sandbox — an environment gap, not a quest defect, and the Linux section already offers a nano/vim fallback).
  • Only nit: after creating guide.md in setup, the quest never explicitly tells the reader to paste the following examples into that file.

2. Barodybroject Stack Analysis — ⚠️ 64 (23 snippets recorded, 8 runnable ran / 5 passed / 3 failed / 3 reasoned / 12 skipped-as-illustrative)

  • Dimensions: commands_work 3, content_accuracy 3, completeness 3, clarity 3, structure 3, safety 5.
  • The quest’s own up-front disclaimer (“point-in-time snapshot… the live repo has since moved to a newer Django release and split settings.py/views.py into packages”) is verified true: a fresh clone shows Django 5.1.15 (not the claimed 4.2.20), and settings.py/views.py are now packages, not single files.
  • But drift extends beyond what the disclaimer flags: .pre-commit-config.yaml no longer exists; the listed GitHub Actions workflow filenames don’t match the live .github/workflows/; the frontend now uses django-bootstrap5 server-side tags, not the documented CDN <link>.
  • The Quick Setup bash block partially worked: git clone, python3 -m venv .venv, pip install -r src/requirements.txt all succeeded, but python manage.py migrate failed with OperationalError: connection to server at localhost port 5432 failed: Connection refused when the Docker Postgres stack wasn’t running — exactly the failure mode the quest’s own inline NOTE warns about, though the quest’s stated exception type (ImproperlyConfigured) is imprecise (that only fires for the explicit DB_CHOICE=sqlite case, not the default).
  • pip install pip-audit && pip-audit ran for real and reported 7 known CVEs against the bundled pip; pip list --outdated ran cleanly.
  • Two illustrative settings.py excerpts (DB config, Redis CACHES) raised NameError: name 'env' is not defined when executed directly — expected for excerpted config, but the quest doesn’t flag them as non-standalone.
  • No dedicated hands-on exercise ties the doc’s 4 objectives to a concrete task — it reads as reference material, not a stepwise quest.

3. CSS Styling Basics — ✅ 94 (15 snippets recorded, 10 ran / 10 passed / 4 reasoned / 1 skipped)

  • Dimensions: commands_work 5, content_accuracy 5, completeness 4, clarity 4, structure 5, safety 5.
  • The engine built the full working project (index.html + styles.css) across all three chapters and rendered it in real headless Chromium: screenshots at 1200px confirm exactly 3 grid columns (matching @media (min-width: 960px)), and at 375px confirm exactly 1 column (matching the mobile-first base rule).
  • Box-model, flexbox header, and the [data-theme="dark"] re-skin (background #111111, link #2563eb) all rendered exactly as claimed.
  • Real gap found: Chapter 3’s fixed-column grid-template-columns media queries silently override (not supplement) Chapter 2’s repeat(auto-fit, minmax(200px, 1fr)) rule on the same .card-grid selector — confirmed by rendering test, the auto-fit technique never actually applies once Chapter 3’s CSS is added, and the quest never flags this as a replacement rather than an addition.
  • xdg-open/PowerShell mkdir with backslash paths couldn’t be exercised/matched literally in this Linux sandbox — expected environment limitations, not quest defects (judged reasoned for the Windows-specific block).

4. Bootstrap Framework — ✅ 85 (10 snippets recorded, 7 ran / 6 passed / 1 failed / 2 reasoned)

  • Dimensions: commands_work 4, content_accuracy 5, completeness 3, clarity 4, structure 5, safety 5.
  • Assembled the full starter grid + navbar + card + utility page and validated all Bootstrap 5.3 class names. Independently compiled Bootstrap’s actual Sass source and confirmed .mt-4 { margin-top: 1.5rem !important; } — matching the quest’s specific claim exactly.
  • Real gap found: the Option B Sass customization snippet (npm install bootstrap sass + a .scss file) never shows the compile command. The natural next step a learner would try, npx sass custom.scss custom.css, fails with “Can’t find stylesheet to import” because Dart Sass can’t resolve node_modules paths without an explicit --load-path flag, which the quest never mentions. Once compiled correctly (with the flag added), the color-override technique itself worked as claimed.
  • Secondary objective “wire up… a modal” has no code example anywhere in the quest despite being named explicitly; alerts are mentioned in prose but never shown as a code block.

5. Building & Testing the Git Init Shell Script — ❌ 16 (7 snippets recorded, 4 runnable ran / 0 passed / 4 failed / 1 reasoned / 2 skipped)

  • Dimensions: commands_work 0, content_accuracy 0, completeness 0, clarity 2, structure 2, safety 4.
  • The engine cloned the exact repo the quest names (git clone https://github.com/bamr87/it-journey.git) — scripts/git_init.sh does not exist anywhere in it.
  • Every “Try it locally” command fails immediately: chmod +x scripts/git_init.shNo such file or directory; bash -n scripts/git_init.sh → exit 127; the headless run (bash scripts/git_init.sh --headless -n test-quest-sample --no-push --gitignore python, macos --scaffold python) → exit 127; shellcheck scripts/git_init.shdoes not exist. tests/bats/ also doesn’t exist, so the embedded Bats example (reasoned, not run directly) would fail identically.
  • My own independent, read-only check of this session’s working tree corroborates it: ls scripts/git_init.sh and ls tests/bats both return “No such file or directory” here as well, as of 2026-08-26 — this is not a one-off sandbox-clone fluke.
  • This matches a prior independent QA walkthrough’s identical finding (per the engine’s own summary), and the identical defect a July 27 walkthrough of this same window reported — it has persisted for at least a month.

🐞 Issues Found

Every item cites what was actually run/observed (tested) or read directly from source (reasoned); severities as the engine scored them.

  • HIGH · Building & Testing the Git Init Shell Script · “Get the script first” block + all 4 “Try it locally” snippets · testedscripts/git_init.sh does not exist in bamr87/it-journey (confirmed both by the engine’s fresh clone and by this session’s own ls against the current working tree). Every acceptance criterion is unreachable. Fix: either ship the actual scripts/git_init.sh (and tests/bats/test_headless.bats) in the repo, or rewrite the quest to have the learner author the script inline instead of claiming “it ships in the repo.” This defect has now persisted across at least two walkthroughs of this window (2026-07-27 and today).
  • MEDIUM · Building & Testing the Git Init Shell Script · “Get the script first” block · tested — Add a fail-fast check right after the clone (ls scripts/git_init.sh || exit 1) so a broken repo state surfaces one clear message instead of four separate cryptic exit-127 errors.
  • MEDIUM · Barodybroject Stack Analysis · Quick Setup bash block · tested — The inline caveat says migrate “raises ImproperlyConfigured without a database,” but the actual error with no DB_CHOICE set is django.db.utils.OperationalError: connection refused — a different exception than documented. Fix: correct the exception claim and explicitly instruct docker compose up -d (Option 1) before migrate even under the Option 2 (local Python) path, since Postgres is a hard dependency either way.
  • MEDIUM · Barodybroject Stack Analysis · Quest structure/objectives · reasoned — Objective 3 (“assess whether the analysis still matches the live repo”) is never turned into an actual exercise — no “clone and diff” instruction exists despite the doc’s own disclaimer acknowledging drift. Fix: add a concrete hands-on comparison task.
  • MEDIUM · Barodybroject Stack Analysis · Stack tables · tested+reasoned — Drift beyond the disclaimer’s stated scope: .pre-commit-config.yaml no longer exists, the GitHub Actions workflow list doesn’t match live (ci.yml, infrastructure-test.yml, container.yml, quality.yml, openai-issue-processing.yml claimed vs. real ci.yml, claude.yml, deploy.yml, jekyll-gh-pages.yml, maintenance.yml, markdown-oneline.yml), and Bootstrap is now served via the django-bootstrap5 package, not a CDN link. Fix: fold these into the same “re-verify” banner already covering the Django-version claim, or drop the file-specific claims.
  • MEDIUM · Bootstrap Framework · Chapter 3 Sass customization (Option B) · testednpm install bootstrap sass plus the .scss source alone leaves a learner unable to produce any CSS: npx sass custom.scss custom.css fails with “Can’t find stylesheet to import.” Fix: add the actual build command, e.g. npx sass --load-path=node_modules scss/custom.scss dist/custom.css, or point to a bundler that resolves node_modules automatically.
  • MEDIUM · CSS Styling Basics · Chapter 2 vs. Chapter 3 .card-grid overlap · tested — Chapter 3’s fixed-column grid-template-columns rules have equal specificity to and silently replace Chapter 2’s auto-fit technique on the same selector, but the quest presents Chapter 3 as additive. Fix: add a one-line callout noting the replacement.
  • LOW · Bootstrap Framework · Secondary objective “Interactive Components” · tested — A modal is named as an explicit objective but never demonstrated with code; alerts are named but only mentioned in prose. Fix: add a modal example and an alert alert-warning code block.
  • LOW · Advanced Markdown · Chapter 1 setup → examples flow · reasoned — After creating guide.md, the quest never explicitly tells the reader to paste the following examples into it. Fix: add a one-line prompt.
  • LOW · Barodybroject Stack Analysis · Illustrative settings.py excerpts · tested — Two settings.py snippets (DB config, Redis CACHES) raise NameError: name 'env' is not defined if run standalone. Fix: label them “excerpt — not standalone runnable.”

No safety issues anywhere in the slice (safety scored 5 in four of five quests, 4 in the git-init quest only because of a minor cleanliness nit in its Bats teardown, not a hazard).

🔗 Chain Continuity

Read in plan order, this window is not one coherent chain — it mixes a genuinely well-linked main-quest arc with two topically orphaned quests, exactly as a prior walkthrough of this same window (2026-07-27) also found:

  • The web-authoring spine holds together and is well-designed. Advanced MarkdownCSS Styling BasicsBootstrap Framework form a real progression under the shared quest_line: "The Web Fundamentals Codex" / quest_arc: "Forging Your First Website". Bootstrap’s frontmatter explicitly lists CSS Styling Basics as a recommended_quests prerequisite, and its content genuinely assumes the box-model/selector vocabulary CSS Basics teaches (e.g. it never re-explains the box model before using border-box-adjacent concepts). Each declares required_quests: [], matching the 🟢 Easy / “no prior experience” framing so a beginner can start cold. A learner who finishes quest 3 (CSS) is correctly prepared for quest 4 (Bootstrap).
  • The two lower-scoring quests are structurally disconnected, not links in the chain. Both Barodybroject Stack Analysis (quest_line: "Stack Analysis Series") and Git Init Testing (quest_line: "Git Mastery Series") declare empty required_quests, empty recommended_quests, and empty unlocks_quests — nothing in the slice leads into or out of them, and neither teaches a game-development-relevant skill. They share level code 0001 with the web-authoring trio only by tier placement, not by topic or dependency graph.
  • Git Init Testing’s break is a prerequisite-honesty failure, not a difficulty mismatch. The quest’s premise (“it ships in the IT-Journey repository — clone it… before running anything else”) is simply false for the repo as it exists today. A learner has no path to satisfy the quest’s first instruction, let alone its four acceptance criteria — this is unavoidable, not something a more careful or advanced learner could work around.
  • Barodybroject reads as reference material bolted onto the quest format, not a step-by-step exercise — its four stated objectives are addressable from its content but never turned into an actual task, so even where the content is accurate, a learner isn’t guided to do anything with it.
  • Relevance to Game Developer specifically: the front-end trio (Markdown/CSS/Bootstrap) is a reasonable Apprentice-tier foundation for a game dev who will eventually build HTML5/web-embedded games and needs to document, style, and lay out project pages — but nothing in this window touches game concepts (input, loops, canvas, sprites), which is expected of a shared foundation tier but worth noting 2 of 5 quests in this window add neither web-fundamentals depth nor game-dev-specific value.

Net: the linked main-quest journey (Markdown → CSS → Bootstrap) is sound and ready to build on. The slice’s weakness continues to be the two topically orphaned quests — and one of them (Git Init Testing) is a hard, persistent blocker that has now been independently confirmed broken across at least two walkthrough runs a month apart.

🧠 Reasoning & Method

  • Mode: execute (sealed). The quest-walkthrough.yml workflow pre-computed and sealed walk-evidence.json / walk-evidence.md via the deterministic agentic execute engine before this session started; I consumed them as-is and made zero edits to walk-plan.json, walk-evidence.*, or any quest content (the engine’s child claude processes can’t authenticate from my Bash tool, so I could not and did not re-run it). This was not a --mock run.
  • What I ran vs. reasoned: All passed/failed/skipped outcomes cited above are from commands the execute engine actually ran in its disposable sandbox (real kramdown/liquid gem rendering, headless-Chromium screenshots, real Bootstrap Sass compilation, a live git clone of both external repos, pip-audit, shellcheck). I performed one additional read-only verification of my own: confirming scripts/git_init.sh and tests/bats/ are absent from this session’s own working tree (ls scripts/git_init.sh, ls tests/bats — both “No such file or directory”), which corroborates the engine’s independent clone-based finding rather than replacing it. Everything in the Chain Continuity section is static reasoning over the five quest source files I read in full, in plan order (frontmatter quest_dependencies/quest_line/quest_arc fields, cross-references between quests, topical fit for a Game Developer).
  • Coverage / limits: This is window 1 of 6 — only 5 of the level’s 26 quests were walked in this run; I make no claim about the other 21 (the perfection ledger accumulates coverage of the remaining windows across separate runs). Per-quest snippet coverage is reported in §Evidence. Environment limits noted throughout: GUI/editor commands (code, open, xdg-open) and literal Windows-PowerShell backslash-path commands could not be exercised in this headless Linux sandbox — these were correctly labeled reasoned/environment-limited by the engine, not scored as quest defects.
  • Confidence: High on the git-init FAIL (reproducible artifact-level break, corroborated independently in two different working trees on two different dates) and on the three PASS verdicts (each backed by real rendering/compilation/screenshot evidence, not inference). Medium-high on the Barodybroject WARN, since it depends on the state of an external, actively-developed repo that will keep drifting further from whatever is verified today.
