Slice digital-artist/0001 · Level 0001 (Web Fundamentals) · Apprentice tier · Engine verdict ⚠️ warn (avg 71.8%) · Walked 2026-09-01

🔗 Perfection run · 🏠 Perfection dashboard · 📄 Raw report · 🕘 Change history

🎯 Session Summary

I walked window 1 of 6 of the Digital Artist (UI/UX) → Level 0001 “Web Fundamentals” (Apprentice 🌱) path, backed by the workflow’s sealed execute-mode engine evidence — real commands run for real in a disposable sandbox, not model assertions. The window covers 5 quests: Advanced Markdown, Technology Stack Analysis: Barodybroject (side quest), CSS Styling Basics, Bootstrap Framework, and Building & Testing the Git Init Shell Script.

Headline verdict: WARN (engine avg 71.8%, 3 pass / 1 warn / 1 fail). The three-quest documentation→CSS→Bootstrap spine that actually serves this character is in genuinely good shape: Advanced Markdown scored a clean 100 with every extended-Markdown feature actually rendered, and CSS Styling Basics / Bootstrap Framework both scored 83 with real headless-Chrome screenshots confirming the visual payoff this path’s lens demands, forward-linked correctly to each other via recommended_quests/unlocks_quests and matching “Character Class Recommendations” call-outs. The other two quests drag the slice down and don’t serve this learner well: Building & Testing the Git Init Shell Script is a hard FAIL (24) — its entire subject, scripts/git_init.sh, does not exist in the repository, so every command in the quest’s “Try it locally” section fails immediately — and Barodybroject Stack Analysis is a backend-focused (skill_focus: backend) Django architecture report (WARN, 69) that reads more like static documentation than a guided quest and sits oddly in a UI/UX learner’s path. Neither of these two failure modes was introduced by this walk; both are visible directly in the quest source and confirmed by sandboxed command runs.

🗺️ The Journey

# Verdict Quest Type Score One-line takeaway
1 Advanced Markdown: Tables, Footnotes & Kramdown main 100 Every extended-Markdown/Kramdown feature actually rendered as described; clean on-ramp, correctly unlocks CSS Styling Basics for this character.
2 ⚠️ Technology Stack Analysis: Barodybroject side 69 A thorough, honest-drift-disclaimered Django stack report whose runnable snippets work, but it’s skill_focus: backend, reads as static reference not a guided quest, and one claim (“no known vulnerabilities”) is contradicted by its own recommended pip-audit command.
3 CSS Styling Basics: Selectors, the Box Model & Layout main 83 Every CSS/HTML snippet rendered exactly as claimed across all three breakpoints in real headless Chrome; a cascade-override defect between Ch.2/Ch.3 grid rules is the main flaw.
4 Bootstrap Framework: Build Responsive Sites Fast main 83 HTML/CSS/SCSS is accurate and compiles; correctly recommended after CSS Styling Basics; missing Sass compile command strands “Option B” learners.
5 Building & Testing the Git Init Shell Script main 24 scripts/git_init.sh does not exist in the repo — every hands-on command fails with “No such file or directory.” Fully blocking.

Score 71.8% average · 3 pass / 1 warn / 1 fail · engine cost ≈ $3.7268.

🔬 Evidence

All outcomes below are commands the execute engine actually ran in its own disposable sandbox, quoted/trimmed from the sealed walk-evidence.json/walk-evidence.md. Dimensions are on a 0-5 scale.

1. Advanced Markdown — ✅ 100 (ran 10 of 9+ snippets identified, several diagram/prose blocks reasoned)

  • Dimensions: commands_work 5, content_accuracy 5, completeness 5, clarity 5, structure 5, safety 5.
  • Passed: table snippet rendered with python-markdown’s tables extension into a correctly left/center/right-aligned <table>; footnote snippet rendered a superscript backlink plus a footnote block, “exactly as described.”
  • Passed: the 4-backtick-wrapping-3-backtick fenced-code trick extracted and ran the embedded greet('World') Python function, returning Hello, World as expected.
  • Passed: Kramdown attribute-list snippet ({: .lead #intro }) rendered via python-markdown’s attr_list extension into <p class="lead" id="intro"> exactly as claimed; definition-list and frontmatter-YAML snippets both parsed/rendered cleanly (PyYAML for the frontmatter block).
  • Passed: installed python-liquid and rendered the quest’s own {% raw %}...{% endraw %} block — output was the literal, unexecuted Liquid tags, confirming the raw/endraw teaching point.
  • Skipped/environmental: code guide.md exits 127 in the headless sandbox (no VS Code installed) — noted by the engine as an environmental limitation, not a quest defect; the Windows PowerShell block was skipped (no Windows env available) but judged well-formed by inspection.

2. Barodybroject Stack Analysis — ⚠️ 69 (8 of 8 runnable blocks executed; 15 more judged reasoned as illustrative diagrams/trees/tables)

  • Dimensions: commands_work 4, content_accuracy 3, completeness 3, clarity 3, structure 2, safety 5.
  • Passed: the Quick Setup bash block — git clone, python3 -m venv + pip install -r src/requirements.txt, python manage.py migrate (with documented DB_HOST/etc.) — all ran with no errors against the live bamr87/barodybroject repo.
  • Passed: pip install pip-audit && pip-audit ran successfully and found 23 known vulnerabilities in cryptography, Django, markdown, and pip — directly contradicting the quest’s own “Known Vulnerabilities: None identified” claim in the same document.
  • Passed: pip list --outdated listed real outdated packages including Django itself (5.1.15 → 6.1), confirming the quest’s own “drift disclaimer” holds (the live repo really has moved past what the document describes).
  • Reasoned only: 15 of 23 blocks are directory-tree illustrations, mermaid diagrams, or comparison tables with nothing to execute — the engine’s basis for scoring structure only 2/5 (a report, not a walked sequence of steps).

3. CSS Styling Basics — ✅ 83 (11 of 9+ snippets combined and executed in real headless Chrome)

  • Dimensions: commands_work 4, content_accuracy 4, completeness 4, clarity 4, structure 5, safety 5.
  • Passed: full boilerplate index.html + styles.css written to disk and rendered in headless Chrome — title, header text, and styled .lead paragraph all appeared as expected; selector rules (p, .lead, #hero, .site-header h1) all applied correctly, confirmed visually via screenshot.
  • Passed: box-model snippet (box-sizing: border-box, width:300px, padding:16px, border:2px solid, margin:24px auto) rendered as a centered ~304px bordered box matching the described box-model behavior.
  • Passed: the mobile-first .card-grid + two @media breakpoints were verified with three actual headless-Chrome screenshots: 375px → 1 column, 700px → 2 columns, 1200px → 3 columns, exactly as claimed.
  • Reasoned (flaw noted): the Chapter 2 .card-grid grid rule (grid-template-columns: repeat(auto-fit, minmax(200px,1fr))) is silently overridden by Chapter 3’s mobile-first same-selector rule via source-order cascade — the quest never flags this override, which the engine cites as an unflagged pedagogical defect.

4. Bootstrap Framework — ✅ 83 (8 of 9+ snippets validated/executed)

  • Dimensions: commands_work 4, content_accuracy 4, completeness 4, clarity 4, structure 5, safety 5.
  • Passed: the combined Chapter 1-3 HTML (container/row/col starter, responsive navbar with data-bs-toggle, card with badge/button, spacing/flex utility divs) validated with Python’s html.parser — all tags balanced, markup matches real Bootstrap 5.3 patterns.
  • Passed: the Chapter 3 SCSS “Option B” block was actually compilednpm install bootstrap sass then npx sass --load-path=node_modules custom.scss custom.css completed successfully.
  • Gap noted by the engine: despite compiling successfully in the sandbox, the quest text itself never gives the reader the npx sass ... compile command — only the npm install step is shown — so a learner following Option B as literally written would install the tooling and then not know how to invoke it.

5. Building & Testing the Git Init Shell Script — ❌ 24 (6 commands attempted, 5 failed)

  • Dimensions: commands_work 0, content_accuracy 1, completeness 1, clarity 2, structure 2, safety 4.
  • Failed: git clone https://github.com/bamr87/it-journey.git && cd it-journey && chmod +x scripts/git_init.sh — clone/cd succeeded, but chmod failed: “No such file or directory” — the file does not exist anywhere in the repo (verified by the engine via a fresh clone, repo-wide search, and git log).
  • Failed: bash -n scripts/git_init.sh → exit 127, “No such file or directory.”
  • Failed: bash scripts/git_init.sh --headless -n test-quest-sample --no-push --gitignore python, macos --scaffold python → same failure; no headless/scaffold behavior observable at all.
  • Failed: shellcheck scripts/git_init.sh → “openBinaryFile: does not exist” (shellcheck itself was already present in the sandbox, v0.9.0 — the tool isn’t the problem, the subject is).
  • Worked around, not a quest defect: sudo apt-get install -y bats was denied by sandbox policy (no sudo), so the engine cloned bats-core from source and invoked bin/bats directly to still exercise the example .bats file’s syntax.
  • Passed: the example Bats test itself (tests/bats/test_headless.bats) is syntactically valid — confirmed by actually running it with bats-core (though it necessarily fails at runtime since its subject script doesn’t exist).

🐞 Issues Found

Every item cites what was actually run/observed (tested) or read directly from the quest source (reasoned).

  • HIGH · Building & Testing the Git Init Shell Script · “Try it locally” / prerequisite script · testedscripts/git_init.sh does not exist in bamr87/it-journey (verified by fresh clone, repo-wide search, and git log). Every hands-on command in the quest fails immediately with “No such file or directory.” Fix: add the script to the repository at that path, or update the quest to point at the correct path/branch/tag where it actually lives. This is fully blocking — nothing in the quest can be completed hands-on until it’s resolved.
  • HIGH · Building & Testing the Git Init Shell Script · Acceptance Criteria · tested — none of the six acceptance criteria (bash -n clean, shellcheck clean, bats pass, .gitignore creation, --scaffold python, --dry-run behavior) could be confirmed, because the subject script is absent. Fix: once the script exists, re-verify each criterion against real output.
  • HIGH · Technology Stack Analysis: Barodybroject · Security & Quality Assessment section · tested — the document claims “Known Vulnerabilities: None identified,” but running the quest’s own recommended pip-audit command surfaces 23 CVEs (including several in Django) in the same sandbox session. Fix: extend the existing drift disclaimer to explicitly cover the security section, or remove the stale claim.
  • MEDIUM · Technology Stack Analysis: Barodybroject · overall structure · tested/reasoned — only 8 of 23 blocks are executable; the objectives checklist at the top is never walked through step by step in the body, and there is no completion/validation section. Combined with skill_focus: backend and no digital-artist-facing framing, this reads as a static reference report dropped into a UI/UX learner’s path rather than a guided quest. Fix: add an explicit “Do this” ordered walkthrough of the 4 stated objectives and a validation checklist (already recommended by the engine); a maintainer should also reconsider whether this side quest belongs in the digital-artist slice at all, or whether it needs artist-facing framing (e.g., “what does this stack choice mean for the pages you’ll style”).
  • MEDIUM · CSS Styling Basics · Chapter 2→3 cascade · tested — Chapter 2’s .card-grid grid rule is silently overridden by Chapter 3’s mobile-first same-selector rule (confirmed live in headless Chrome); the quest never flags this as a deliberate override. For a design-first learner still building cascade intuition, an unflagged override teaches the wrong mental model. Fix: add a one-line callout noting Chapter 3 intentionally supersedes Chapter 2’s grid rule.
  • LOW · Bootstrap Framework · Chapter 3 “Option B” Sass path · tested — the quest shows npm install bootstrap sass but never shows the actual compile invocation (npx sass --load-path=node_modules custom.scss custom.css), which the engine had to supply itself to confirm the step works. A CLI-shy learner following the quest as literally printed has no path from “installed” to “compiled.” Fix: add the missing npx sass ... command right after the install step.
  • LOW · Building & Testing the Git Init Shell Script · frontmatter/linking consistency · reasoned (read directly from source) — this quest is missing the environment: block, rewards.badges, quest_series naming (“Level 0001 Quest Line” vs. the other four quests’ “The Web Fundamentals Codex”), and any “Character Class Recommendations” / “Next Steps in Your Journey” section that every other quest in this window has. Its closing Knowledge Graph footer also reads **Level hub:** [[Level 001 - Journeyman Challenges]], which does not match this level’s actual hub name used everywhere else in the slice ([[Level 0001 - Web Fundamentals]], e.g. in advanced-markdown.md). Fix: bring this quest’s frontmatter/footer in line with its siblings’ template (environment block, rewards, character recommendations, corrected level-hub wikilink) — independent of the blocking script-missing issue above.
  • LOW · CSS Styling Basics / Bootstrap Framework · accessibility treatment · reasoned — beyond a single unverified prose claim in Bootstrap Framework (“you get a styled, accessible widget”), neither quest mentions alt text, ARIA, or contrast anywhere, despite both being squarely UI-producing quests. The character sheet’s walk lens explicitly calls for “responsive and accessible by default” at this level. Fix: add at least one concrete a11y checkpoint per quest (e.g., an alt attribute on an example image, a contrast note on the theming custom-properties section).

No safety issues anywhere in the slice: every quest scored safety 4-5/5 — no destructive commands, and the one sandboxed workaround (bats-core built from source instead of sudo apt-get install) was a sandbox-policy accommodation, not a quest-authored risk.

🔗 Chain Continuity

Playing this window in order, as the Digital Artist persona (a design-first learner for whom the terminal is foreign territory and every visual outcome matters more than the command that produced it):

  • The documentation → CSS → Bootstrap spine holds together well. Advanced Markdown’s own “Next Steps” section explicitly recommends CSS Styling Basics for the “🎨 Frontend Specialist” class, and CSS Styling Basics in turn lists bootstrap-framework in both quest_dependencies.unlocks_quests and its “Character Class Recommendations” (“🎨 Frontend Specialist: Master Bootstrap Framework”); Bootstrap Framework’s recommended_quests correctly points back at css-styling-basics. A learner who walks these three quests in this order gets a coherent, forward-linked progression, and — critically for this character — every step that changes what renders is confirmed by the engine’s real headless-Chrome screenshots (breakpoints at 375/700/1200px), satisfying this path’s “the result is visible” checkpoint.
  • CSS Styling Basics correctly hand-holds the HTML this character hasn’t been taught elsewhere. There is no dedicated HTML-fundamentals quest anywhere in level 0001 (checked all 26 quest filenames), and CSS Styling Basics’ own stated prerequisite is “comfort creating and editing HTML files” — a real gap on paper. In practice the quest closes that gap itself: it supplies the complete index.html boilerplate (correct <!DOCTYPE>, viewport meta, semantic <header>/<main>) inline rather than assuming it, so a learner arriving with only Advanced Markdown behind them is not actually stranded. This is a fragile good outcome, though — it depends on this specific quest continuing to be generous with boilerplate, not on the path guaranteeing HTML fundamentals anywhere.
  • The other two quests in this window are chain outliers rather than links in the artist’s path. Barodybroject Stack Analysis (skill_focus: backend, quest_dependencies entirely empty in both directions) and Building & Testing the Git Init Shell Script (also fully empty quest_dependencies, no environment block, no character recommendations) neither build on the three quests above nor feed into anything after them. Structurally they are dead-ends the planner’s dependency-sort placed inside this window without any prerequisite or unlock relationship — which is consistent with their quest_dependencies: {required_quests: [], recommended_quests: [], unlocks_quests: []} frontmatter, but means a Digital Artist learner walking this window start-to-finish experiences an abrupt tone and subject-matter break twice: from CSS-Bootstrap’s visual, browser-based work into a Django backend audit, and then into a shell-scripting/CI quest whose entire premise (a script that doesn’t exist) can’t be completed at all. Neither quest teaches or reinforces any of this level’s character-sheet checkpoints (semantic HTML, CSS/Bootstrap, Jekyll theming/publishing, avatar/identity assets, one JS interaction).
  • The git-init quest is a particularly poor fit independent of its blocking bug. Even if scripts/git_init.sh existed, this is a bash -n/shellcheck/bats-testing exercise with zero visual payoff and no rendered output to confirm — exactly what this character’s walk lens flags as friction (“a real beginner of this character class” has the least native comfort with raw CLI tooling, and this quest gives it to them with no hand-holding beyond a single blockquote note).
  • No claim is made about the other 21 quests in level 0001 — this is window 1 of 6 (offset 0, size 5) of a 26-quest level; the remaining quests (including whatever HTML/JS/Jekyll/avatar-forge content exists elsewhere at this level per the character sheet’s checkpoints) accumulate coverage in the ledger across future windows.

🧠 Reasoning & Method

  • Mode: execute (sealed). The quest-walkthrough.yml workflow pre-computed and sealed walk-evidence.json/walk-evidence.md via the deterministic agentic execute engine before this session started; I consumed both files as-is and made zero edits to walk-plan.json, walk-evidence.*, or any quest content. I did not and could not re-run the engine myself (its child claude processes cannot authenticate from my Bash tool). This was not a --mock run — the evidence carries real cost_usd/turns/duration_s/session_id metadata per quest (total $3.7268 across 5 quests, 13-24 turns each, 112-260s wall time each).
  • What I ran vs. reasoned: every passed/failed/skipped cited in §Evidence is a command the execute engine actually ran in its own disposable sandbox (real Python-markdown/python-liquid rendering, real headless-Chrome screenshots at three viewports, a real git clone + pip-audit/pip list --outdated against the live barodybroject repo, a real npm install/npx sass compile, and five real failed attempts against the missing git_init.sh). My own contribution this session is read-only reasoning on top of that sealed evidence: I read all five quest source files end-to-end in plan order, the quest-character-digital-artist character sheet for persona/lens/per-level checkpoints, and each quest’s quest_dependencies/environment frontmatter directly to trace the forward-link chain and spot the frontmatter-consistency and level-hub-wikilink drift in the git-init quest (both reasoned, cited by exact quoted content, not executed).
  • Coverage / limits: this is window 1 of 6 of a 26-quest level; I make no claim about the other 21 quests at level 0001 (they accumulate coverage in the ledger across future runs). Within this window, all 5 planned quests were walked and none were skipped by me — the only skips were the engine’s own environmental ones (no GUI/VS Code/Windows/macOS in the Linux sandbox), each explicitly labeled skipped in the evidence, not silently dropped.
  • Confidence: High on every tested finding in §Evidence and the two HIGH issues sourced from them (the missing script, the pip-audit contradiction) — each is a reproduced failure or a reproduced command output, not an assertion. Medium-high on the chain-continuity and character-fit findings (the css→bootstrap forward-link chain, the two chain-outlier quests, the accessibility gap) — these are direct, source-quoted readings of frontmatter and prose against the character sheet’s explicit checkpoints, but “how much of a curriculum-placement problem” the two outlier quests represent is ultimately an editorial judgment for a maintainer. Medium on the level-hub wikilink drift (Level 001 - Journeyman Challenges vs. Level 0001 - Web Fundamentals) — clearly an inconsistency by direct comparison, but I did not check whether “Level 001 - Journeyman Challenges” is a stale target that resolves elsewhere in the vault.
