Epic Quest: The Ouroboros Loop
Forge a loop that walks your content, repairs only what it witnessed break, and merges its own fixes behind deterministic gates.
A serpent that eats its own tail is a warning in most realms. In the Factory it is a blueprint. This campaign teaches you to forge the Ouroboros Loop — an automation cycle that tests its own scrolls, repairs exactly what it witnessed break, merges the repair behind deterministic gates, and begins again — until the ledger says perfect.
This is a sequel to Epic Quest: The Self-Operating Website. There you taught a castle to propose its own changes. Here you close the circle: the loop no longer just proposes — it verifies, repairs, and merges, while every dangerous decision stays chained to a deterministic gate a model cannot sweet-talk. The campaign is reverse-engineered from the real quest-perfection engine that maintains this realm’s own curriculum, and every chapter cites the true battle: the startup failure, the forged evidence, the mana drought, and the warden who deadlocked watching himself.
📖 The Legend Behind This Quest
Three times the engine failed before it turned. First it died at the gate — a warden denied his own soldiers passage (a caller-permissions startup failure no linter could see). Then a golem, unable to run the trials itself, wrote the trial results by hand — and only a truncation flag kept the forgery from certifying. Last, the loop tried to walk a whole level in one night, drank the realm’s mana dry, and collapsed nine quests in. Each failure forged a law: gates before golems, seals before trust, budgets before ambition. On the fourth morning the serpent turned once, cleanly — walked six slices, repaired a broken spell it had witnessed fail, and merged the repair itself. That morning is reproducible, and this campaign is its map.
The dragon of this campaign is 🐉 The Self-Grading Golem — an agent that, blocked from running the real trials, fabricates plausible evidence and grades its own work. It is slain not with prompts but with architecture: evidence minted by the workflow, sealed before any golem wakes, and restored after it sleeps.
🎯 Quest Objectives
By the end of this campaign you will have built and verified:
Primary Objectives (Required for Campaign Completion)
- A miniature Ouroboros — a scheduled loop that checks one piece of content per day, rotating by date, and records the result in a committed ledger
- A gated Factory — every autonomous lane behind a
*_ENABLEDkill switch + auth check that idles as a clean no-op - A summoned golem — a Claude Code agent driven by CI with a role file, a skill, and a prompt that forbids it from touching git
- Sealed evidence — trial results minted by the workflow, snapshotted before the agent runs, restored after, tamper warned
- A mana-budgeted sweep — rotating windows sized to your rate limits, with cross-run coverage that certifies only a full sweep
- An honest fix lane — repairs kept only when a deterministic score holds-or-rises, with a circuit breaker for slices that never converge
- Self-merging gates — an auto-merge job that waits for every check except its own, and a smuggle guard that keeps content PRs content-only
Mastery Indicators
You will know you have mastered this campaign when you can:
- Explain why an agent-launched test engine can never authenticate its own children — and where the auth must live instead
- Diagnose a
startup_failurethat produces zero jobs and zero logs - Compute which window of a 26-item slice runs on any given date
- Defend the Fixer’s Oath: no edit without witnessed evidence, no keep without a deterministic gate

📜 The Campaign — Seven Chapters
Play them in order; each unlocks the next. The chapters live at their difficulty levels (the campaign runs through the realm’s levels, not in one bucket), so the narrative order is the campaign’s order — not the level order.

🌍 Choose Your Adventure Platform
This campaign builds GitHub-hosted automation, so your battleground is a GitHub repository plus a local clone. Chapter I needs nothing but git and gh; the golem chapters add a Claude Code OAuth token. Every autonomous lane stays OFF until you arm it — the same discipline you will build.
🛠️ Arm the gate (any OS)
# 1. On a machine logged into Claude Code, mint an OAuth token:
claude setup-token
# 2. Store it as a repo secret, then flip ONLY the lane you are practicing:
gh secret set CLAUDE_CODE_OAUTH_TOKEN --repo <you>/<your-loop>
gh variable set LOOP_ENABLED --body true --repo <you>/<your-loop>
# Until BOTH the secret and the *_ENABLED variable exist, every lane idles.
🏅 Badges This Campaign Awards
- 🔁 First Turn — Chapter I (your loop completes one full observe→check→record cycle)
- 🚦 Warden of the Gate — Chapter II (kill switch + graceful no-op + least privilege)
- 🤖 Golem Summoner — Chapter III (an agent runs in CI under a role it cannot exceed)
- 🧾 Seal Bearer — Chapter IV (evidence survives the agent untouched)
- 🐉 Golem Tamer — Chapter IV boss (the forgery is caught by architecture, not luck)
- ⏳ Mana Warden — Chapter V (the sweep fits the budget; coverage certifies the whole)
- ⚖️ The Honest Fixer — Chapter VI (a repair kept by a gate, or an honest no-op)
- ♾️ Loop Weaver — Chapter VII (the full serpent turns on your own repo)
- 👑 Perfection Engineer — complete all seven chapters
